Oxalis triangularis Care Guide
Light:
Oxalis triangularis thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves, but a well-lit spot near a window is ideal.
Watering:
Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season (spring and summer). Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, but do not let the plant sit in water to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in autumn and allow the soil to dry out more as the plant goes dormant.
Temperature:
Prefers temperatures between 15°C and 24°C. Keep away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Humidity:
Average indoor humidity is sufficient. If your home is very dry, occasional misting can help but is not essential.
Soil:
Use a well-draining potting mix; a combination of standard houseplant compost with some perlite works well.
Feeding:
Feed once a month during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser at half strength. No feeding is necessary during dormancy.
Dormancy:
Oxalis triangularis often goes dormant in winter. Leaves may die back; reduce watering significantly and keep the plant in a cool, darker place. Resume regular care when new growth appears in spring.
Repotting:
Repot every 1-2 years in spring, using fresh compost to encourage healthy growth.
Pests:
Watch for aphids, spider mites and mealybugs. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Additional tips:
The striking purple, triangular leaves open during the day and close at night – an intriguing feature to enjoy.
Avoid overwatering, as this is the most common cause of problems.
With a little attention, Oxalis triangularis makes a charming and unusual houseplant, perfect for adding a splash of colour to your home.
