Senecio serpens Care Guide

Senecio serpens, commonly known as Blue Chalksticks, is a striking succulent with silvery-blue, finger-like leaves that make it an excellent addition to any indoor or outdoor collection.

Light:
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light but can also handle full sun. A sunny windowsill is ideal indoors. Outdoors, a spot with some direct sunlight but protection from harsh afternoon sun suits it best.

Watering:
Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between watering sessions. Overwatering can cause root rot. During the winter months, reduce watering even further as the plant goes into a dormant period.

Soil:
Use well-draining succulent or cactus compost. Good drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging and root rot.

Temperature:
Senecio serpens prefers warmer temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. It is not frost-hardy, so if kept outside, bring it indoors or protect it during colder months.

Humidity:
This succulent prefers low to moderate humidity levels and does well in average indoor conditions.

Feeding:
Feed with a diluted, balanced succulent fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer) approximately once a month. Avoid feeding in autumn and winter.

Propagation:
Senecio serpens can be propagated easily from leaf or stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous over for a few days before planting in well-draining soil.

Additional Tips:

  • Rotate the plant regularly to ensure even growth.

  • Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant healthy.

  • Monitor for pests such as mealybugs and aphids, treating promptly if needed.

With minimal care, Senecio serpens makes a durable and attractive houseplant, ideal for both beginners and seasoned plant enthusiasts.
